On the move: GBTA conference
TAG’s Managing Director for Corporate UK – Shelley Brady along with Global Head of Account Management – Peter Snowdon attended the largest business travel conference in Europe - GBTA (Global Business Travel Association) which was held in Berlin during the month of November. The GBTA network provides business travel and meeting professionals with a European remit to the best education, training, research, benchmarking tools and events in the industry.
Here is a combined review from the pair on their experience from start to finish at the GBTA.
After a long day of cancelled flights due to fog, we arrived at our hotel much later than planned. An early night meant that we were up bright and early the next morning. Our first stop was a case study session:
Towards Robotic Travel Management Beyond The Tactical - A Million Dollar Case Study in Robotic Travel Management.
This education session was extremely thought provoking and gave us some insight into how to potentially make the job of a travel manager less tactical, more strategic and more effective through robotics. This interview-style Case Study provided real-life examples of how two companies applied automation to a number of their travel management processes to achieve million Euro savings within months.
It was then off to Breakout room one, this time for a personal development education style session with the amazing Caroline Strachan from Festive Road, this one entitled;
From The Weeds To The Sky: Moving from Tactical Doer to Strategic Leader
Shelley said… This session was very insightful and one I was most looking forward to as I could relate to a lot of the content. It's a challenge everyone faces at some point in their career. How do you move from being the "doer" to the strategic leader. This session definitely gave me some top tips on how to manage myself through the change but also help shift others' perception of myself.
Mind your business: Influence for Success
During lunch International Lecturer David Meade, delivered a rather humorous session on minding our business. David’s session taught us how to gain momentum within our organisation through using science to understand how we make decisions so that we get the answers we want and also taught us how to accelerate the performance of our organisation from good to great by better motivation of our team. Hilariously funny and good light relief.
The NDC TMC: The Travel Management Company Proposition of the Future - An Exercise in Design Thinking
This session was all about how distribution strategy is changing which means that the momentum of the IATA New Distribution Capability (NDC) rollout is creating both challenges and opportunity for the TMC community. Servicing, technology, aggregation, and consulting services are all under the spotlight. This session presented an exclusive preview of one TMC’s proposition of the future. Definitely food for thought with regards to how we communicate what NDC will mean for our clients. More exciting news from TAG on this hugely anticipated subject over the coming weeks.
As well as being able to attend these hugely insightful sessions, Pete and I were able to network and chat to fellow peers within the Travel Industry. 2019 will bring huge change for the travel industry so being able to network and talk Brexit was a great opportunity for us to gain insight as to how we can adapt and prepare for the challenges Brexit will bring to the to the Travel Management Community.
Attending GBTA also allowed us to meet with brand new tech suppliers who we had some very interesting and exciting conversations with – again more to follow on this in the near future.; Watch this space. Interesting and exciting times ahead not just for TAG, but for the Travel industry in general. A very worthwhile few days.
