Events in Queenstown, New Zealand: the expert’s view
Event Director, Laura Tucker, from the Global Events Asia Pacific team shares her insight on what makes Queenstown in New Zealand a truly memorable and very accessible conference and incentive destination for guests travelling offshore from Australia, as well as the rest of the world.
Queenstown was once upon a time a former gold rush town, set on Lake Wakatipu in New Zealand's South Island. Now the town is known as an outdoor-lover's dream, surrounded by majestic mountains and nestled on the shores of crystal clear Lake Wakatipu.
Why Queenstown as an event destination?
The location is world-famous for its breath-taking scenery, vast range of experiences, relaxed vibe and friendly people – guests will be blown away the moment they land!
When it comes to the weather, it’s a four-season event destination – warm blue-skied summers, vibrant colours of autumn, snowy winter wonderland and new blossom and fresh produce in spring.
Flight access during peak season (summer and winter) is great, with a number of daily direct flights from Australian airports with carriers including Virgin Australia, Air New Zealand and Qantas, as well as a few low cost carriers. Getting there is easy. If guests are travelling from further field, we recommend connecting in Sydney as Queenstown is a 3 hour onward flight.
If you are planning an event, a three night programme is ideal - each day will never be the same for the group. As New Zealand’s premier incentive destination, Queenstown offers up the chance for guests to enjoy exciting world-class adventure activities such as helicoptering, hiking and biking trails, golf courses and more sedate options including wine tours and day spas. Inspirational and motivational activities such as canyoning, white water rafting, river boarding, 4WD off-road tours of film locations including Lord of the Rings, Wolverine and The Chronicles of Narnia provide guests with a truly, memorable, once-in-a lifetime experience.
When it is time to get down to business, the region offers a wide range of high-quality accommodation and conference options either close to the lake such as the Hotel St Moritz or resort type venues slightly out of town such as Millbrook Resort or Queenstown Hilton (yet still relatively close by either a short water taxi ride or coach transfer).
After a busy day of conferencing or team building, there are numerous dinning options available that can accommodate groups of all sizes. Winnies, an iconic local hot spot offers an informal experience giving guests the chance to let their hair down and get to know each other over a game of pool. For a formal function or gala dinner, Skyline the mountaintop restaurant offers spectacular lake views whilst guest dine and Jack's Point golf club an impressive modern piece of architecture that draws its inspiration from the traditional Kiwi woolshed can offer seated dinners for large groups.
Once the official programme concludes, the town offers a vibrant nightlife with numerous restaurants, bars and clubs for guests to enjoy in their free time.
To make the event extra special, a number of touches can enhance a programme whether it be setting the scene for your group by surprising them off the plane and escorting them directly onto an awaiting Jet boat which will deliver them to their hotel. Or perhaps take to the skies with a heli tour of the Remarkables with a Champagne pit stop and check in on top of the mountain!
