Academy Award 2017 nominees: La La Land sets all-time record with 14 nominations

The nominations for the 89th Academy Awards were revealed this morning, January 24 in Los Angeles.

As expected, this years’ favourite ‘La La Land’ takes the lead with 14 nominations, matching the record previously held by ‘Titanic’ (1997) and ‘All About Eve’ (1950). The number of nominations, even includes two of the films’ songs in the same Best Original Song category, making the Director Damian Chazelle the most Oscar-nominated musical director in history, beating Mary Poppins' 13 nominations. The musical’s nominations also include Best Song, Best Actor and Actress for Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone.

Barry Jenkins’ coming-of-age drama ‘Moonlight’ and Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi ‘Arrival’ follow on eight nominations each.

The critically acclaimed ‘Lion’, ‘Manchester by the Sea’ and ‘Hacksaw Ridge’ also made their presence known with six nominations each. One of the surprises this year is the nomination of  Mel Gibson’s for Best Director with his return film ‘Hacksaw’.

For the first time in history, the nominations were not announced at the traditional press conference attended by members of the entertainment media. Instead this year, the Academy officials revealed the nominees in a global web broadcast on the Oscars website.

On the night of the awards will be announced by a long list of celebrities including Jennifer Hudson, Brie Larson, Emmanuel Lubezki, Jason Reitman, Ken Watanabe and Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs.

The Oscars will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel and take place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on Sunday February 26, 2017.
