The Oscars 2017; Moonlight wins Best Picture post mix-up

Considering the current status of affairs in Europe and as well as in the U.S., everyone expected this years’ ceremony of the Oscars to have a very political tone to it. None, however, could have predicted what happened yesterday.

The momentous occasion was slightly disrupted due to the unfortunate ‘miscommunication’ resulting in the wrong picture being announced as winner of the Best Motion Picture category. ‘Oopsy’ does not quite cover it. It appears Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway were given the envelope of previous Oscar winner Emma Stone, leading Faye to announce La La Land as the winner. Midway in through their thank you speeches the mistake was announced and Moonlight being announced as the official winner as Best Picture.

Thankfully the remainder of the ceremony was flawless. Damien Chazelle, is now officially the youngest director to ever win an Oscar, at the age of 32 with La La Land. This hugely anticipated film won another five awards including: Best Actress, Best Original Score, Best Original Song (City of stars), Best Production Design and Best Cinematography.

Host Jimmy Kimmel, certainly past the test as first timer; his highly political and entertaining opening speech was met with praise, plus, he somehow managed to maintain his composure during the Moonlight/La La Land fiasco, which is commendable in itself.

Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight certainly was the other big winner of the evening further to its seven more Oscar nominations the film won Best Supporting Actor (Mahershala Ali) and Best Adapted Screenplay awards in addition to the best picture.
