Building a better conference with TAG

Organising a major national conference is not an easy task. Yet despite the challenges, national organisation Hardware and Building Traders (HBT) has, over the past few years, been responsible for pulling together one of the country’s biggest annual events of its type.

HBT is a buying group created for independent timber, hardware, garden and building supplies retailers. Buoyed by the recent enormous growth in the sector across the country, HBT has grown from just 13 member stores in 1997, to today working with more than 600 in every Australian State and Territory. Those stores are supported by commercial relationships with more than 450 suppliers.

Central to the success of HBT has been its collaborative approach and the growth of HBT’s annual conference has played a key role.

To help deliver the best possible conference, HBT has built a strong working relationship with TAG’s corporate travel division which has delivered cost savings for delegates through negotiated accommodation rates. Since HBT began working with TAG in 2015, TAG has booked more than 2,200 room nights for conference delegates.

HBT’s Ashlin Fisher explains working with TAG has provided outcomes for both the event organisers and the member delegates.

“We first worked with TAG on our Sydney conference in 2015 and found the savings they were able to provide on hotels for our attendees highly competitive,” she says. “This year in Adelaide it was no different, the team at TAG negotiated rates at selected hotels close to the conference venue with a range of options to cater for the varying budgets.”
