Fine Dining in Airports
The airport dining experience has always been perceived as mediocre at best. The obvious priorities being convenience and speedy service, the quality tended to be overlooked far too often. Fortunately things are changing. In recent years, various reputable chefs have taken on the challenge of serving high quality food in various international airports where, until then, fast-food chains dominated the offering.
Beginning in June passengers traveling through Heathrow Terminal 2 will have access to new fine dining restaurants. This comes as part of a 2.5 billion pound development in the centre of the world’s busiest international airport.
One of these new dining establishments is from multi-award winning chef Heston Blumenthal, called The Perfectionists’ Café. The restaurant will be located after security and will serve nostalgic favourites and British eccentricity. The name is a nod to Blumenthal’s popular television show, In Search of Perfection. In keeping with the best methods for producing food, he found the “perfect” size bun for his burgers in addition to travelling to Naples to study pizza making. The restaurant will feature the world’s first wood-burning pizza oven in an airport.
Also opening in Terminal 2 is a new restaurant created by the collaboration of four female British TV chefs, including Sophie Michell (Executive chef of Pont St. at Belgraves Hotel). The Gorgeous Kitchen will open in June in a new contemporary space, specialising in global cuisine while utilising British-grown produce. There will even be an ‘Express’ menu for travellers on the go to enjoy a meal within 15 minutes.
In addition to these amazing restaurants coming to London Heathrow’s Terminal 2, other Michelin chefs with acclaimed restaurants in airports include:
- Chef Gilles Dupont’s Altitude Restaurant in the Geneva airport
- Andalusian chef Dani García’s stylish La Moraga gastrobar in Spain’s Malaga Airport, serving up a wide-ranging menu of signature tapas dishes
- Gordon Ramsay’s Plane Food in Terminal 5 of Heathrow Airport, with its superb Michelin-worthy British cuisine, express menus and three course picnic menus that you can pre-order
- Chef Marco Akuzun’s Top Air restaurant (pictured) at Stuttgart Airport, a Michelin-starred restaurant in its own right and currently the only Michelin starred restaurant within an airport. It is also the only airport restaurant in the world with a Michelin star for more than 22 years.
