The best ski resort you’ve probably never heard of…

At TAG, we thrive on seeking out little-known locations and sharing our findings with our clients. As it’s ski season, we’ve got something surprising up our sleeves – we’ve uncovered a peaceful, unassuming spot that you’ve probably never heard of, but it’s the ideal destination for your next ski incentive…

Where is Engelberg?

Engelberg is a quiet town located in the heart of Switzerland, nestled among breath-taking Alpine scenery at the foot of the Titlis glacier. This Swiss mountain town – whose name translates as ‘Angel Mountain’ – was founded in 1120 by a Benedictine monk, and the monastery that he established still dominates sleepy Engelberg today.

World-class skiing

Although Engelberg doesn’t shout as loudly as other more well-known ski resorts, visitors to this beautiful region can expect excellent off-piste and long runs – it’s nothing less than a freerider’s paradise. The resort is home of one of the longest vertical descents in the world, which runs 2,000 metres from the Titlus glacier down into town. A total of 82km of slopes for skiing and snowboarding await you and your colleagues, including plenty of red and black runs and nursery slopes for beginners. Arrive early enough in the morning and you’ll be the first to leave a trace if the virgin snow. Incentive trips don’t get more exhilarating than this.

For keen snowsport fans, the best time to visit is December through until April. Up on the glacier, skiing is possible from October to May – and this area can be accessed by a network of state-of-the-art lifts, which includes one of only a revolving cable cars in the world.

Adrenaline-fuelled fun

If you really want to test your limits, the snowXpark is the place to be – here you can zoom through tight corners in the snow on a top-of-the-range snowmobile. Take it to the next level by organising a race with your whole team.

You can also test your mettle by tackling Europe’s highest suspension bridge, which hangs 3,000 metres above sea level. It’s 100 metres long and 1 metre wide, and you’ll feel as though you’re hovering effortlessly above the valley below as you walk from one end to the other. Those brave enough to take it on will be rewarded with unrivalled views of glorious Alpine scenery.

Après ski

Engelbert may be a small monastery town, but the après ski scene is sure to satisfy. Before you leave the slopes, you might like to refuel at the Panorama Restaurant, which stands at 3,020 metres above sea level and affords spectacular views of the glacier. The Sternbar at Station Stand is another popular choice. Head back down to the pedestrianised centre and you’ll find the atmosphere to be welcoming and inclusive, with a host of inviting bars and restaurants, as well as a choice of late-night venues. Groups are very well catered for. We highly recommend indulging in some fondue and beer (to keep you warm, of course).

Cosy accommodation

From snug chalets to Belle Epoque hotels, there’s a host of places to rest your head in Engelberg. You can even spend the night in an igloo in the nearby igloo village. Many hotels can be taken over for exclusive use and a number offer fantastic conference facilities – it’s ideal for a team getaway or a short refresher to inspire creative thinking.

Remember that TAG can act as a one-stop-shop for your ski incentive – we take care of everything, from start to finish. We can create a tailored trip to suit you and your colleagues, whether you’re looking for a rustic setting or something more luxurious for your guests.

Easy access

This is the most accessible Alpine resort in the whole of Switzerland, both by car and public transport, all year round. It lies just a little over an hour from Zurich Airport by car and an hour and a half from Basel Airport. If you’re arriving by train, the journey takes slightly longer, but it couldn’t be easier – just wheel your luggage out of arrivals into the modern train station, go down one floor and jump abroad the next Engelberg-bound train. They run on the hour.
