Celebrating Earth Day 2024: TAG’s Road to Net-Zero

Earth Day is a perfect time to reflect on the numerous ways in which each and every one of us make a mark on the future of our planet. Whether you have already been making consistent strides toward bettering the world or are simply curious about sustainability, it's never too late to get involved.

At TAG, we've been doing our part behind the scenes to gather data and uncover the most effective ways to leave a positive, lasting impression. As a company that specializes in travel and events, we recognize our responsibility to protect our communities and the Earth, so that the destinations where we operate can remain beautiful and resilient for generations of travelers to come.

For the past several years, TAG Managing Director of APAC, Shane Barr, has been leading the charge to amplify our company awareness around sustainability and implement eco-friendly initiatives across the globe. Due to the inevitable emission of carbon in the travel business, Barr has prioritized discovering the ways in which we can offset our carbon footprint and has championed finding the ideal partner to help us get there in an efficient and effective manner. After doing our due diligence and researching organizations, we pursued the world's leading scientific benchmarking certification and advisory group for sustainable travel and tourism, EarthCheck.

"While our APAC region has successfully offset 2021 and 2022 emissions and is about to do the same for 2023, our company goal is to be completely net-zero by 2027," Barr explained. "This project has been an enormous endeavor, but with the help of our Special Projects Manager Alexe Wallace, and an incredible certification and advisory partnership with EarthCheck, we are proud to say we are on our way to make it happen."

Getting started toward a successful sustainability journey can seem like a daunting task. With TAG's astounding 400% growth in the past three years, finding the time to record and input data, as well as effectively implement office changes, proved to be challenging. However, our partnership with EarthCheck ensured that we were guided on the best procedures and ways to become carbon neutral—as well as how to make improvements when our progress was at a standstill. Following our bronze certification in the APAC region, TAG’s US and UK offices are not far behind in meeting the same EarthCheck certification requirements.

If you are feeling overwhelmed with starting to implement your own company sustainability initiatives, know that you aren't alone and there are several resources to help along your journey. Barr continued, "Do your due diligence and find a company right for you; take EarthCheck for example, one that helps map the process for you. When we started, our biggest hurdle was knowing exactly where to begin. But there are companies out there who can guide and help you with ideas on how to make improvements if you are stuck. A partnership with EarthCheck ensures that we are held accountable in doing our part on a larger scale."

As an ever-growing company, those of us at TAG are very proud of our progress toward leaving the planet better than we found it. Currently, we are in the process of choosing the ideal sustainable project to get involved with and leave our impact—one that not only benefits the environment, but the people and animals within a community as well. Through our team's commitment to prioritizing our sustainability initiatives, we are doing a small part in making the world a better place for future generations. We encourage you to get started today; it’s never too late to take action.
