UK Airports Told to Reimpose 100ml Liquids Rule

Some regional UK airports have been told to temporarily reintroduce the 100ml liquids security rule by the UK government. The airports—London City, Newcastle, Leeds Bradford, Southend and Teesside—have completed the installation of Next Generation Security Checkpoints (NGSC) scanners, which has allowed them to end the long-running 100ml limit on liquids in passengers' hand baggage rule.

Virgin Atlantic to Resume Flights to Tel Aviv From September

Virgin Atlantic launched its Heathrow-Tel Aviv service in 2019, but the route has had a chequered history, with flights being temporarily suspended in 2020, and again on 11 October last year due to the conflict between Israel and Hamas. A daily service will resume on 5 September, operated by Virgin's A330 aircraft. The airline has also announced a new codeshare agreement with Israeli carrier, EL AL—with Virgin placing its code on EL AL's flights between Tel Aviv and Heathrow from 10 June. EL AL will do the same on Virgin's flights when they resume later this year.

Heathrow Relaunches Paid-For, Fast-Track Service After Four-Year Hiatus

Heathrow is bringing back its paid-for, Fast Track security service for the first time since 2020. The service is now available to pre-book for departures from 1 June and costs £12.50 per person. Fast Track is open daily between 0600 and 2200, across all the airport's terminals. Customers are able to select a one-hour window to pass through security, and pre-bookings can be made up until midday the day before travel.

Heathrow Achieves New Record for Passenger Traffic

Heathrow achieved a new traffic record by catering to 81.5 million passengers over the past 12 months. The airport expects this momentum to continue during the summer season, with traffic forecast to add up to 30 million passengers over the next three months. Figures show that Heathrow's traffic for the first five months of 2024 rose to 32.4 million passengers—up by 7.9% compared with the same period last year.

At IATA Conference, Doubts About Sustainable Fuel Goals

In November, the United Nations' aviation arm set a goal of reducing aviation emissions 5% globally by 2030, largely through the use of SAF. But as they convened for the IATA Annual General Meeting, airline industry leaders were dubious about whether the target of the International Civil Organization (ICAO) could be met.
