Virgin Australia Orders More 737 Max Aircraft

Virgin Australia has increased its pipeline of new Boeing 737 Max family aircraft, with six more Max 8s scheduled for delivery in the second half of 2024. This will bring the airline’s total number of Max 8s to 14 and total planned latest generation aircraft to 39 units.

“We are investing in our fleet to best meet our customers’ needs while positioning the business for success in the long-term. A more modern, sustainable and streamlined fleet is central to our ongoing transformation,” said Virgin Australia's Chief Strategy and Transformation Officer, Alistair Hartley.

Singapore Changi Airport Offers Free Bike Hire to Passengers With a Layover

Singapore Changi Airport is offering free bike hire to passengers with a layover. Travellers are free to use the bikes for two hours to explore attractions in the vicinity, including the Jurassic Mile and nearby beaches along Singapore’s East Coast.

“This initiative represents Changi’s endeavour to delight our passengers as they fly through our airport or visit Singapore. We hope our passengers could experience the tropical outdoors of our airport and its unique surrounding attractions beyond the indoor terminal offerings,” said Ang Siew Min, SVP Airport Operations Development and Airport Operations Services.

Qantas Unveils A220 Aboriginal Paint Scheme 

The first of Qantas’ Airbus A220 aircraft has rolled out of the paintshop in Mirabel, Canada, sporting a striking Aboriginal paint scheme as part of the group’s Flying Art Series.

The aircraft (named after the artwork Minyma Kutjara Tjukurpa) will be configured with 10 business class and 127 economy seats, and will initially operate flights between Melbourne and Canberra.

Air Canada Boosts Asia-Pacific Schedule 

Star Alliance carrier Air Canada has announced it is strategically boosting its Asia-Pacific network capacity with additional flights and larger aircraft beginning mid-December through to the end of next summer 2024.

Vancouver-Hong Kong will see 11-weekly flights from 13 December to 29 February to support holiday and Lunar New Year travel, and 10-weekly flights from 1 March to 26 October.

The Vancouver-Bangkok winter seasonal service will be extended, with four-weekly flights to 5 May, and daily service between 8 January and 28 February.

Alaska Airlines Agrees to Acquire Hawaiian Airlines in $1.9B Deal

Alaska Airlines has agreed to acquire Hawaiian Airlines in a deal valued at $1.9 billion, including $18 per share in cash, the carriers announced Sunday. Each airline will retain its customer-facing brand, while integrating into a single operating platform "behind the curtain," Alaska CEO Ben Minicucci said during a Sunday investor call.

The acquisition is "something we have looked at for a while," Minicucci added. "Simply put, we are acquiring a hub in a premium global leisure market that has the potential to approach Seattle in size."

Virgin Atlantic has operated the first transatlantic flight powered by 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

The airline’s Boeing 787 Dreamliner departed London Heathrow for New York JFK International on 28 November 2023, under the label 'Flight100.'

Emirates Becomes First Airline to Use 100% SAF on an A380 Flight

The flight was operated from Dubai International (DXB) with one of its four engines powered on 100 per cent SAF, making it the first time that drop-in SAF has been used on an A380 aircraft.

Adel Al Redha, chief operating officer at Emirates Airline, said, “Emirates is the first passenger airline in the world to operate an A380 with 100 per cent drop-in SAF powering one of four Engine Alliance GP7200 engines. This is another proud moment for Emirates and our partners, as we put words into action with the research into and the trialling of higher concentrations of SAF to eventually lead to industry adoption of 100 per cent SAF flying.”
