EU Confirms Another ETIAS Delay to Spring 2025

The European Union has confirmed that the launch of the new ETIAS travel system for non-EU visitors has been further delayed until spring 2025.

Last month, reports suggested that ETIAS implementation was set for a further postponement into 2025. This was due to continued delays with the introduction of the related Entry-Exit System (EES), which needs to be operational before ETIAS can be implemented.

United Airlines Sets Its "Largest-Ever" 2024 Transatlantic Schedule

United Airlines plans to operate its "largest-ever" transatlantic summer schedule in 2024, with nonstop flights to 38 cities.

On 24 May, the carrier will debut service between Newark Liberty International Airport and Faro, Portugal. According to United, this will result in the carrier becoming the "first and only airline to directly connect" the US with Faro. The flight will operate four times weekly using Boeing 757-200 aircraft.

Virgin Atlantic to End Austin Service on "Softening" Corporate Demand​

Virgin Atlantic plans to suspend service between London Heathrow and Austin, Texas, a route launched in May 2022, citing a "persistent softening in corporate demand, specifically the tech sector." The carrier's last service between the cities will operate 7 January 2024.

Frankfurt Airport Rolls Out Facial Recognition Across All Terminals​

Frankfurt Airport has installed biometric systems across all terminals, with facial recognition technology now available for all airline passengers at the German hub.

The move follows biometric trials by Lufthansa and will allow travellers to pass through each stage of the airport journey—from check-in, through to security and boarding—by simply scanning their face.

The 56th Annual General Meeting of the Arab Air Carriers’ Organisation, hosted by Saudia for over two days, has concluded its proceedings. The organisation also signed two agreements with SITA, a specialised company in aviation information technology. IATA Boss Willie Walsh Urges Government Action on Aviation Sustainability & Decarbonisation

Aviation industry boss, Willie Walsh, has urged international governments to become more committed to the decarbonisation of the airline industry and the building of its sustainable future.

He said the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) will be key to the cleaning of the industry and that decarbonisation remains an achievable goal by 2050. However, he warned the industry can’t do it alone and needs more government help.
