Gatwick launches its first passenger app with flight information, live queue times and more

Gatwick’s new app – one of several passenger-facing digital innovations coming on stream soon - offers passengers personalised flight alerts, real-time queue updates for check-in and security, intuitive navigation using beacon technology and shopping, restaurant and airport offers. Other initiatives going live soon in Gatwick’s ‘digital transformation’ programme include advanced chat bots, augmented reality wayfinding and the airport-wide use of the Internet of Things.

Ryanair agrees to recognise pilot unions to avoid widespread customer disruptions over Christmas period

Ryanair today (Friday, 15th December) announced that it has written to the pilot unions in Ireland, the UK, Germany, Italy, Spain and Portugal inviting each of them to talks to recognise these unions as the representative body for pilots in Ryanair in each of these countries, as long as they establish Committees of Ryanair pilots to deal with Ryanair issues, as Ryanair will not engage with pilots who fly for competitor airlines in Ireland or elsewhere. Ryanair will now change its long-standing policy of not recognising unions in order to avoid any threat of disruption to its customers and its flights from pilot unions during Christmas week.

China Airlines adds non-stop flights to London, capturing all 5 major European destinations

China Airlines began operating the Taipei-London (Gatwick) service on 1st December with the new A350-900 XWB fleet making four flights a week. This route makes China Airlines the only airline in Taiwan to offer non-stop flights to London.

Delta expands Basic Economy across Atlantic, partners introduce similar fare product

Delta Air Lines' Basic Economy fare is now available on more than 50 percent of Delta's flights between North America and Europe. Qantas opens new London Heathrow lounge

British Airways - Doha cancellations

British Airways have cancelled the London Heathrow - Doha International BA123 from 1st – 13th December and Doha International - London Heathrow BA122 from 2nd – 14th December, with a re-protection agreement available on Qatar Airways (QR). Affected passengers will be rebooked onto a BA*QR codeshare flight operated by British Airways or Qatar Airways (QR) to/from London Heathrow (LHR) and Doha (DOH).

Qatar Airways is the first airline to operate an Airbus A350 to the Maldives

Qatar Airways announced that it is the first airline ever to fly the state-of-the-art Airbus A350 to the Maldives. The airline has upgraded its current double-daily A330 service to an A350, with the first A350 beginning operations today and the second A350 service joining shortly afterwards on 3rd November.

Qatar Airways continues expansion in Europe and Russia with additional non-stop flights

Qatar Airways has announced that it will increase daily frequencies to the Scandinavian capitals of Stockholm and Oslo, alongside the Italian cities of Milan and Rome. Due to an increase in demand to key European destinations, especially from the Asia Pacific region, flights to Rome, Milan and Stockholm will increase to 17 per week from Doha’s Hamad International Airport, while flights to Oslo are set to increase from seven to 10 frequencies per week.

Alitalia - New flights to Johannesburg for Summer 2018

Starting from 8th April 2018, Alitalia will inaugurate a new direct Rome Fiumicino - Johannesburg flight, resuming the service between Italy and South Africa four times per week. Alitalia will operate the route with the newly designed Airbus A330 aircraft, offering three classes of service: Business, Premium Economy and Economy.

Strike action by the RMT union for Sunday 19th November

The RMT union has called a strike for Sunday 19th November that will significantly affect CrossCountry train services. If the strike goes ahead, CrossCountry will operate a reduced service between 09:00 and 19:00.
